“Everything negative - pressure, challenges - is all an opportunity for me to rise” ~ Kobe Bryant
Overview
As first gens, we often feel academically pressured, whether it is to get straight A’s or overcoming an older sibling’s legacy. This pressure can take a toll on your mental health and affect you negatively when it comes to academics. Sit back and take notes, for I will tell you how I face these common academic pressures.
Straight A’s
We are often told to get straight A’s, which can be extremely hard to do. If you are in sports or many activities, it can be even harder. For me, I help my fellow peers/tutor, ask questions to my older sister and friends, and complete every assignment on time. Although this may not seem like a lot, tutoring helps me review, asking questions betters my understanding, and completing every assignment helps me stay on track and boosts my grades.
Overcoming Siblings
As a younger sibling, I know how hard it is to overcome an older sibling’s shadow. There comes a lot of pressure with being a younger sibling, but asking for advice from your older siblings helps. For example, if a big decision comes up that your older sibling has faced, asking what they did and if they might have changed their decision based on the outcome, can help relive some of your stress.
Hobbies
Having good hobbies can help relieve stress and expand the mind. Reading 15 minutes a day or watching a movie can help expand your mind to new ideas or ways of thinking. Coloring or listening to music can release dopamine, bettering your mood and relieving stress.
Conclusion
Overall, if you face academic pressure, knowing how to overcome it can help you relieve stress from your everyday life. Doing your assignment and asking questions are the main ways to help your grades, and set good hobbies can help your mental health. Keep at it and you will see results!
